New Study Reveals CyanthOx™ as a Key Protective Agent for Mitochondrial Function

YANGLING, CHINA – A groundbreaking study conducted by researchers from the College of Food Science and Engineering at Northwest A&F University, in collaboration with Puredia Limited, has uncovered significant protective effects of CyanthOx™, a Sea Buckthorn Proanthocyanidin complex, on mitochondrial functions in macrophages under oxidative stress caused by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The findings are published in the latest issue of Frontiers in Pharmacology.

Study Overview
The research team set out to explore the protective effects of CyanthOx™ on mitochondria, the energy powerhouses within cells that are crucial for health and longevity. Using a variety of experimental techniques, including biochemical assays, fluorescence microscopy, and electron microscopy, the team studied the impact of CyanthOx™ on mitochondrial function under oxidative stress, a common cellular stress associated with many diseases.

Key Findings

  • Mitochondrial Protection: CyanthOx™ significantly increased mitochondrial membrane potential, inhibited the opening of mitochondrial permeability transition pores (mPTP), reduced mitochondrial swelling, and enhanced mitochondrial biosynthesis.

  • Activation of Cellular Pathways: The study revealed that CyanthOx™ activates the AMPK-PGC1α-Nrf2 pathway, enhancing the cell's ability to manage oxidative stress and maintain mitochondrial function.

  • Potential Health Implications: These findings suggest that CyanthOx™ could be effectively used in preventing and treating conditions associated with oxidative stress, such as cardiovascular diseases and aging-related disorders.

"The research highlights the potential of CyanthOx™, a major antioxidant component of the sea buckthorn plant, in safeguarding cells against oxidative damage, particularly in enhancing mitochondrial function and preventing diseases related to oxidative stress such as arteriosclerosis," explained Dr. Qiang Peng, the lead researcher of the study.
The study utilized a range of sophisticated techniques including Western blot analysis, mitochondrial membrane potential measurement, and electron microscopy to explore the effects of CyanthOx™ on cellular mitochondria. Results indicated that CyanthOx™ activates the AMPK-PGC1α-Nrf2 pathway, a critical signaling pathway for cellular energy regulation and antioxidant defense.

"By activating this pathway, CyanthOx™ helps maintain mitochondrial function even under conditions of oxidative stress, offering a promising avenue for the development of functional foods and cosmetics that could enhance cellular health and longevity," Dr. Peng added.
