Reducing Blood Sugar in Prediabetes in 5 Weeks
November is World Diabetes Month. We would like to share the result of a new clinical trial, which shows an intake of sea buckthorn fruit puree for 5 weeks reduces fasting blood glucose in prediabetes. (Ren, Z., 2021)
The study was done on 38 patients with impaired glucose regulation. They were given 90mL of flavonoids-rich, e.g. quercetin and isorhamnetin, sea buckthorn fruit puree per day for 5 weeks. The result showed that:
The intervention group had 0.014 mmol/L decreases in their fasting plasma glucose, whereas the placebo group had an increase.
The fasting plasma glucose continued to decrease during the wash-out period, suggesting long-term effects of sea buckthorn.
No significant change in the glycated serum protein levels. A high level indicates an increased risk of diabetes.
Sea Buckthorn berry is a rich source of potent antioxidants, with flavonoids like quercetin, isorhamnetin, kaempferol, and myricetin. Researches have shown that flavonoids may help lower blood sugar by decreasing glucose absorption, increasing insulin secretion and sensitivity, and regulating hepatic glucose production.
